Information on Au-pairs

Nature of the program
The au pair program is a cultural exchange program and not a contract or work. Au pairs must be welcomed as a member of the family.

A typical au-pair is a female or male carer who is between 18 – 27 who has got a genuine interest in children and has got a bit of childcare experience. She/he will at least have finished compulsory education and has a desire to go overseas to experience a new culture and learn a foreign language and to experience a new culture. An au pair should be treated as part of the family. The idea is for them to stay and work for you in exchange for a pocket salary, room and board. They will in general stay for 3 – 12 months.

We have girls from Sweden,Finland,Romania,Germany,France,Turkey,Poland andSlovakia and various other EU countries.

An au-pair is not a nanny and should not be left in sole charge of babies or young children under the age of 2.

An au-pair is not a domestic servant or Housekeeper.

Duties
A typical au-pair works 5 – 6 hours per day, Monday to Friday – usually caring for school-age children before and after school, and doing some light housework. In addition she/he will do about 2 babysitting nights per week. Free time should be given daily for study or to pursue personal interests and they must have two days a week completely free. Au pairs are considered to be working if they are required to be available and are not free to leave the house even if they are not actively working, for example if the children are in bed asleep. Most families do not usually ask an au-pair to work weekends apart from babysitting. Au-pairs should not be asked to baby-sit every Saturday, although one evening per weekend is not unreasonable. If there is additional work during school holidays, this should be made clear at the time of making the offer and reasonable additional pocket money can be expected in return for this.

It is important that the au-pair is agreeing to the suggested duties of the family before he/she accepts the job. If there are any disagreements make sure you talk to the au-pair about this and you will both find that a successful compromise can be reached.

*these duties can be included where there is less childcare and the children are out of the house for most of the day

 

Au pairs should not be required to do housework such as ironing, when looking after children of primary school age and toddlers.

 

 

Peek-a-boo au-pairs
Our candidates are generally of a very high standard. Peek-a-boo Au-pairs specialize in Swedish and Scandinavian au-pairs, who have got a great reputation and a very good level of English. We interview all candidates over the phone or in person. The candidates will always provide us with at least two references before we admit them to start working for a family.

An au-pair is a great option for the busy mum who needs an extra hand on a daily basis

Salary/pocket money:  We suggest a minimum of £70 per week for 20-25 hours but most our families are paying £80-100 per week for these hours.

Salaries are dependent on the au-pairs age and experience and Peek-a-boo will advise on a realistic remuneration obtainable by each individual applicant.

Some families choose to give additional benefits, such as help with language tuition, use of a car or travel pass. Some families pay for the return flight if the au-pair stays for the full agreed time.

No contract is normally written between the family and au-pair since the agreement is an informal one and the au-pair should be looked upon as a family member rather than an employee. We do however supply you with an agreement that you might wish to use.

The Family’s responsibility:

To welcome the au pair into your family and treat him/her as part of your family. To make it a happy and safe environment for everyone in the family. To register the au pair with your GP.Inform the au pair of his/her duties, free time and pocket money in your welcome letter. Give your au pair a little time to settle into his/her new way of life and for your family to have a stranger in your home, therefore a little patience and understanding is required by both the au pair and the family. Au pair’s should have one week’s paid holiday after every 6 months employment, They should also have all Public Holidays off. If you go away and leave the au pair in your home, he/she must be left an adequate food allowance or enough food and be paid as normal.

 

Visa procedure:

Most au-pairs we place are from the EU and they do not need a work permit to work in the UK. We place Romanian au-pairs as well. Romanian’s are EU citizens as of the 1^st January 2007 but there are special regulations for them to work in the UK. Romanian Au-pairs needs an Accession worker card in order to be registered as a worker in UK.

To obtain an Accession Worker Card, they must apply to Home Office. They need to complete an application Form (the home office website will provide them with one or you can obtain one via the agency) and return it with an acceptance letter/letter of employment from her employer.  The au-pair must also enclose her/his identification documents such as a passport etc. We assist our au pairs with help and information on the process.

My perfect au-pair

I am sat enjoying the last week of my holiday in my back garden with the sun shining in my face and a cool drink of Ice-tea in my hand.
At one point last year I thought I’d never be able to relax in my own home with the kids around again.
I happen to be a working single mum with 3 boys aged 6-9 and unless I get a helping hand in the house, there is no way I can cope with everything.
Last June, I had just let my nanny of 6 years leave since my boys were at that stage all in school and I didn’t need someone to look after them full time anymore. My mum lives very nearby but it just didn’t seem fair to expect her to look after the boys every afternoon until I got home month after month.
So one year ago, I started looking for an au-pair who could help with the boys, around the house and baby-sit the odd night
I started placing ads in local papers, on the Internet and tried a couple of agency’s who all claimed that “they had the best au-pairs”. The whole process was very daunting and not to mention exhausting and after having interviewed about 7 various female/male au-pair with very poor English and no experience whatsoever, I was on the verge of breaking down. All this time and effort and no result, so I decided to place the boys with a childminder up the road until I had figured out what to do.
A few weeks after that I had lunch with a college of mine, who started telling me about her wonderful Swedish au-pair, how well she had settled in and how much their children adored her. She told me about an agency called Peek-a-boo Childcare that she had used and was very pleased with. I called Sara at Peek-a-boo that night when I got home from work and I swear I will never look elsewhere after that. She was extremely reassuring, pleasant and helpful over the telephone and even offered to meet me in person to discuss my family’s specific needs. I had my doubts that the agency would be able to replace Lisa with someone just as good but sure enough, two weeks ago when Suzanne showed up I realised that they’d once again managed to spare me the nightmare of having to find an au-pair on my own.

So the bottom line is, thanks to Sara Vestin Rahmani and her super team I am sat here in my garden relaxing, enjoying the hot weather without having to worry about my precious little boys. Just thought I’d let you know how lucky I feel and to pay a tribute to Peek-a-boo for being so fabulous.
