We are a family of five, including Dad, Mom, Barry (7 1/2 year old son), Allison (5 1/2 year old daughter) and Chris 2 1/2 year old son).
Dad (Scott) works in finance, Mom (Sue) in education/community affairs. Both parents are active in the local community, giving of their time and energies. Dad works long hours, but when he’s not working his activity of choice is spending time with the kids. Mom has spent much time with the kids, valuing fun educative play, under a philosophy of parenting that could be described as “use your minds and mind your manners”.
Core family values include the importance of family time, honesty, good work ethics, politeness and consideration for others. Whether an afternoon is spent outdoors on a backyard adventure or indoors at the craft liable, creativity prevails. Another VERY valued activity is read aloud time. The kids love it!
Barry, Allison and Chris are enthusiastic, genuine, outgoing and imaginative kids. They enjoy reading, writing, and creative time. Their routine is well defined as good structure is helpful to children.
A bus takes the older two to and from school Monday-Friday. After school activities need to be driven, and these include various sports programs and occasional play dates (not overscheduled). Late afternoon routine includes dinner prep. and homework (independence is encouraged, only slight surveillance necessary). They all covet outdoor play, and we as parents support and encourage this. End of day routine is dinner, bath & pajamas.
Dad’s family had international exchange students in his home growing up. Mom has been an international exchange student in home stay programs in France and Greece – and she professionally co-coordinated exchange of US/Greek faculty, staff and students. Children have been to Canada, Ireland and France. We are very open to learning about different cultures and customs and consider a program like APIA to be a two-way education.
We live in a traditional colonial home with bedrooms upstairs (private au pair suite downstairs). Large backyard for children’s activities.
Au Pair’s space is a separate room (400 sq. feet) downstairs with separate entrance.
Household rules we’d expect an au pair to follow include, (a) respect for all individuals, (b) no smoking, (c) respect for “way”, “method” of parent’s parenting (i.e. we are a minimal television watching household, with the children usually only watching on occasion in the evening after bath/pyjamas), no au pair overnight guests.
We live in a quaint suburban community of New York. The community is 40 minutes bus ride from Manhattan.
Sincerely,
Melinda and Simon

Dear Au Pair
We are a repeat host family, having welcomed two Au Pairs into our home each of our Au Pairs stayed in our home for a year and have become members of our extended family. Since our children were older, we decided to just have them attend school and/or day care. After about two weeks, the children were begging for another Au Pair! They clearly enjoyed coming home after school each day and interacting with their Au Pair.
We have 3 girls: Kate (11), Jane (8), and Josh (4). We also have a 1-year-old dog name Daisy. He is part Labrador retriever and part Beagle. We have been married for almost 14 years. Paul grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and I grew up in Indiana. We met and married while we were both living in Fart Worth, TX. We moved to Michigan 8 years ago for different reasons depending on which of us you talk to Mona wanted to escape the summer Texas heat, and Paul wanted to live a bit close, to family and friends in Indiana. We settled in Canton, ME, a suburb of Ann Arbor and Detroit.
Reasons for Wishing to Have an Au Pair
There are several reasons for pursuing childcare in the form of an Au Pair versus the other avenues open to us. The opportunity to bring an understanding of a foreign culture to our family stands out as the most important. We lived abroad in Korea for a year and greatly enjoyed the experience and perspective it has brought us, and would like to offer similar experience in diversity to our children Further, we have observed the rewarding life relationships formed in the hosting of Au Pairs in our home Each Au Pair has become a member of our extended family. We also believe that the ability to provide care in our home versus shuttling the kids back and forth to day care every day will cut down on daily stress for everyone concerned.
Most Important Qualities for the Au Pair
Honesty, a good work ethic, and a love of children are of prime importance The Au Pair must set a good example morally and ethically for the children, and have a desire to interact with them in a way that will form a strong bond. Everything else really is secondary.
Thank you and we hope to have another rewarding year with a new Au Pair
Sincerely
Paul and Debbon

Russell and I (Clara) have been married for 9 years and are very active and love to travel. We have been blessed with three beautiful children named Spencer, Ed and Janis. Spencer and Ed are 4-year-old twins born June 29, 2007 and Janis is 2 years old born August 23, 2009. They are great and a lot of fun. The twins (Spencer and Ed) go to school 3 times a week (Tuesday, Wed and Thursday from 9am til 1:00) and Janis goes to school Tuesday and Thursday from 9am til lpm.
Russell travels about 60% of the time so we are looking for someone to help me out when he is traveling as well as give me some free time to exercise and do my part time job. Russell and I also need a date night once a week in order to keep our relationship strong and healthy. This is why we are looking for an Au pair to become part of our family. Having someone from a difference country will give our kids a cultural experience that is priceless as well give them an opportunity to communicate in the Au pair’s native tongue. We can in turn offer a warm loving home for an Au pair to learn about our Country.
I’ve travel to a lot of places in Central and South America and the Caribbean for work. I enjoyed traveling and getting to experience other country traditions. Of course, being they are all Latin American Countries, they were always warm and loving.
My husband and I love tennis, hiking, and boating. I love to work out at least 3 times a week and my husband loves golf. I like to play golf but I am not as crazy about it as my husband but I enjoy doing it cause we get to spend 4 to 5 hours of quality time together (no cell phones), etc. These are a few activities we enjoy.
We go to church on most Sunday mornings which we really enjoy doing as a family. I hope this gives you a little insight into our family.
We have had three au pairs and we look forward to welcoming in our fourth.

Hösten 2011
San Diego, California.
Who are the Darrow’s. We are a family of 4 (3, if you don’t count big lovable dogs as people) that loves to have fun, but unfortunately currently have to work -more than play.
Marie and Joseph are both physicians and work for the Navy at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. Marie is in her last year of training for Ear, Nose, and Throat surgery (ENT), which means that until next July, she spends lots of time in the operating room and works long hours (from 6 AM to 6 PM, more-or-less). Joseph is a specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Joseph’s hours are much more regular (8AM to 5PM on most days).
Luke is just about to turn 1 year. We are lucky enough to have Marie’s mom caring for Lisa, as she has been doing for the past 11 months. She loves to travel, however, so we will need someone to take care of Luke starting around February, although the start dates are not set in stone. The schedule would most often be Monday through Friday, from 8-5 with all weekends off. There might be days that will be longer than normal, but we could easily make up for it by taking a day off work here and there. Flexibility, however, will be important for us, as we never know what will be happening at the hospital that will hold us up at work.
While he is old enough for day care, we are not thrilled at the thought of putting him in that environment he (and we) has been spoiled by 1-on-1 care. In addition, we are thinking of having a second baby in about a year. We try to gets out to playgroups and to meet friends, and expect this to be a part of his week with an Au Pair. He will probably go into pre-school in a couple years, and who knows from there?
We understand that the Au Pair experience is just as much for the Au Pair as the baby, and she would be welcome to join us on weekends, meals and other excursions, if she wanted. We are hoping to give back as much to her as she will give to our family, and with luck, not only will Luke have the best of care, but we will all develop long-lasting friendships.

Our family consists of six people. My husband, Luke is from England. I have always lived on the east coast of the United States. Luke and I have been happily married since 1993. We have three children Mason, 13, Erin, 11 and Evan 9. They are in grades 7, 6 and 3.
We have a very active household. Our children are involved in various sports and activities in their schools and the local community. They play soccer and hockey, wrestle, and take karate classes. In addition to this, they have a lot of homework and other school projects. When they are at home we limit television to weekends and encourage reading and outside play.
Another important thing to note is that we have four dogs, two of which are quite big. They are all gentle animals, but an allergic au pair would not do well in our home. An au pair joining our family should know that she is expected to be a strong support to us. We need her to be very organized so that we are not looking for a soccer uniform when the bus is arriving at the driveway. We need her to know to prepare a dinner for the children, even if it is simple like soup and toast, and to make lunches for the school day. Our au pair should be ready for life in a very fast-paced household.
In return, our au pair has a lot of free time. She is really only with the children for two hours in the morning and about three hours after school. The children are in school all day, so she is able to go to the library, classes, the gym, or for coffee with other au pairs. We have a third car for the au pair to use to get to classes or for driving the children to activities. We are happy to offer the use of the car for trips to the mall or other local activities. We just ask that the au pair would make sure her work around the house, like laundry or planning for the children’s arrival home from school, is done before she leaves the house for the day.
We are looking forward to welcoming an au pair into our home. We always find it so exciting to meet someone new and hope that we can give her a wonderful experience in the United States.

New York
We are an incredibly close and loving family. Our kids mean everything to us and are well behaved, kind and loving. They go to a wonderful, private school which they love attending.
We would like our Au Pair to enrich their lives in many ways and be part of our family. Our eldest son is 12 and is very studious but still loves to play. He’s involved with soccer and piano after school and girls are entering his world just about now! Our 9-year-old daughter is smart and is a little bit of a procrastinator! She is into music, talking on the phone and looking good! Our next daughter is 8 and also very intelligent. She is our nature/animal lover. Our youngest daughter is 5 and is just started kindergarten this year. She is independent (she just recently cut her own hair!) but she plays well too.
We live in a large house in a fairly rural area. Our house is situated 10 minutes from school and about an hour from New York City, which we like to visit a few times a year. Our holiday house in the Bahamas is great and we like to go there whenever we can. It is located in Abaco, which is a small, crime-free island. There are doctors, shopping and lots of yacht people. We like to swim, snorkel, scuba dive and explore with our motor yacht. You’ll need to enjoy swimming and adventuring to be our Au Pair. We spend our entire summer there. It is a great place – you’ll love it.

Hanover, New Hampshire
Apple’s father, Matt and I met in medical school in New Hampshire in 1994. Our daughter Apple was born 17 October 2002, and I was lucky to be able to stay home with her for about seven months, until I began subspecialty training in my medical field: maternal-fetal medicine, or high risk obstetrics. Our first au pair arrived in July 2004, and we have been very happy with hosting au pairs ever since. Apple and I moved back to New Hampshire in the summer of 2008; I am on the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School. Apple’s father Matt is still in the Navy, and is stationed at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. Apple’s father and I are divorced, he comes to visit and stay with us in New Hampshire about once a month, and whenever possible, Apple visits him in Virginia.
In the fall of 2011, Apple will be entering second grade at Crossroads Academy, a small school in the next town, which we love, and where she is very happy too. Apple is at school from 8:00am until 3pm. Our au pair is responsible for helping us on either end of the day, mornings and late afternoon/early evenings, leaving the au pair free during the middle of the day. Approximately three times a month I have to be on call overnight in the hospital.
l have many interests, including reading, running, hiking, camping, vegetarian cooking, music, cycling and skiing (downhill and cross-country). Apple loves to play in the water, and continues to take swimming lessons. She also loves books, and imaginative or pretend play; she plays ice hockey, skis, and takes piano lessons. We have a piano in the house, and even a cello. We enjoy many different kinds of music including bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz and classical. I try to run four times a week (usually at 5:30am), and l ran the Houston Marathon in January 2006. I am currently training for a half-marathon (13.1 miles). I have a mountain bike, and a road bike, so if the au pair wanted to ride, we would always have at least one available. We have a computer at home, which our au pair may use as well.
Our family comes from a variety of backgrounds: geographic as well as religious. I grew up in New England, but my family is now spread out between Connecticut, New Hampshire, Michigan and Texas. Matt grew up in Key West, Florida, and his family is now lives in Florida, Tennessee, and New Mexico. We often take trips during the year, and frequently include our au pair.
The town of Hanover is located on the western side of New Hampshire in the scenic Upper Connecticut River Valley. The river forms the border between Vermont and New Hampshire. The Town has a population of 10,850 and is the home of Dartmouth College, which was established in 1769. Hanover is 2 hours from Boston, 3 hours from Montreal, and 5 hours from New York City. Matt was raised Jewish, and I was raised Episcopalian (protestant Christian). We blend our various holidays and celebrations, so Apple will be exposed to both traditions. For example, in December we light the menorah far Hanukkah, and have a Christmas tree. We do not keep a kosher household, but we are vegetarian. Occasionally we will cook fish or seafood at home, and we do eat eggs and dairy. We do not have any meat other than fish in the house.
We have a cat, named Race, who spends about half his time inside, and half outside, and a dog named Harriet. Harriet loves to play catch and is a good running partner. She is still fairly young, and has a lot of energy, but she is well trained. We recycle as much as possible, including glass, cans, plastic, and paper.
I enjoy international travel very much, although l haven’t been able to do much during the last few years. Apple and I are planning a trip to Italy in May 2011, to visit my sister and her family, who are living in Northern Italy currently. In the past I have spent time in Indonesia, Nepal, Japan, Poland, Great Britain, and spent a semester during college living in Paris, during which time I traveled extensively in Western Europe, including Denmark, Germany, France, and Italy.
I studied German at the high school level for three years, French for four years in college, Japanese for two semesters, and have worked on learning basic Spanish since graduation from medical school. Our exposure to these many different cultures has made us very excited about the opportunity to host an international au pair, as well as sensitive to the possible problems and confusions that can arise when living in a foreign country.
Apple’s father and I want her to have the opportunity to learn about the world and its different people and cultures, as we have. We hope that hosting an au pair will be the beginning of a lifelong international education for her. Having an au pair living with us for the past six years has been a wonderful experience for all of us. We have made four wonderful friends, who we hope to stay in contact with for a very long time. While we have been very sorry to say good-bye to our au pairs, we look forward to our new au pair’s arrival, and the experiences we will have with her.
Au Pair
Sommaren 2011
Washington, DC
We are looking for a new au pair – whoever joins our host family will be joining a family in the Washington, DC metropolitan area that has had four successful years with au pairs. In fact, our current au pair took advantage of the opportunity to extend her stay with us for a second full year! We have been delighted with her, she has been delighted with us.
Let us tell you about our family of four: Charlie, Carla, Aidan (turns 9 in August) and Scott (turns 6 in August). Aidan will be entering 4 th grade, Scott will be entering 1 st grade. Charles works on Capitol Hill. Carla works for a multinational corporation, in Information Technology. Charles commutes to work downtown on the metro system (the metro station is walking distance from our house). Carla works in our suburb (Bethesda, Maryland) both from home and from her office. She also spends a fair amount of time going from one client site to another in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Both parents work full time hours, and we depend on our au pair to take the boys to and from school as well as to their after-school activities.
Our au pair also has to be able to help the boys with their homework. In 4 th grade, Aidan will have significant amounts of homework – our au pair should work with him to make sure that he writes clearly and that he shows his work in his advanced math class. Scott will have much less homework in 1 st grade. She should also work with both of the boys as they practice their piano lessons. Even if she doesn’t have a musical background, she can encourage them and offer positive reinforcement as well as gentle correction.
Our sons are very active boys. They participate in sports activities 3 days/week at the community center near their school. Our au pair picks them up at school, walks them to the community center, does homework with them and prepares a snack for them, and then waits while they have their sports classes. Their piano lessons, once/week, are at the same community center.
We would like an au pair who enjoys outdoor activities with the children as well as who enjoys quiet time with them – cooking, reading, relaxing. Our children respond very well to au pairs – our experiences with au pair in America have all been quite positive, and the children have learned a lot about other countries through these relationships.
We live just outside Washington, DC. There is a metro (underground subway) that is walking distance from our house. It is particularly useful for outings to the dozens of cultural, sports, and other activities in Washington where it is often difficult (and expensive) to park. Our au pairs have loved being so close to so much wonderful, international activity.
We look forward to another very positive relationship, with our very busy family, with another au pair!
